India and China marked 75 years of diplomatic ties with messages of partnership and mutual progress. Chinese President Xi Jinping emphasized the "dragon-elephant tango" as a path to shared success, while Indian President Droupadi Murmu highlighted the benefits of stable relations. Leaders reaffirmed commitments to strategic trust, collaboration, and border peace. Recent high-level meetings and diplomatic talks focused on rebuilding ties, resuming people-to-people exchanges, and fostering cooperation. Both nations aim to advance their relationship for mutual and global benefit.

In a message commemorating the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and China, Chinese President Xi Jinping emphasized the importance of partnership and mutual progress between the two nations. Highlighting the need for the "dragon-elephant tango," Xi called for collaboration to serve the fundamental interests of both countries.

Accompanying President Xi's message to Indian President Droupadi Murmu, Chinese Premier Li Qiang and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also exchanged congratulatory messages to mark the occasion, as announced by the Chinese Foreign Ministry.

Messages of Optimism and Cooperation

President Murmu, in her message, emphasized the benefits of a stable, predictable, and amicable relationship between the two neighbors. According to the state-run Xinhua news agency, she noted that such a relationship would positively impact not just India and China but also the world at large.

The anniversary comes at a time when both nations are making efforts to rebuild ties after a prolonged freeze due to the eastern Ladakh military standoff. President Xi, in his message, described India and China as ancient civilizations, major developing nations, and key members of the Global South. He underscored the significance of their partnership during this critical phase of modernization for both countries.

Xi further stated that fostering a relationship of mutual achievement—symbolized by the "dragon-elephant tango"—is in the best interests of both nations and their people. He encouraged both sides to adopt a strategic and long-term perspective in handling bilateral relations and to pursue peaceful coexistence, mutual trust, and common development. Additionally, Xi expressed his willingness to work closely with Murmu to enhance mutual trust, strengthen collaboration across various fields, and maintain peace in border areas.

A Shared Commitment to Stability

President Murmu highlighted the unique role of India and China as neighbors that together house one-third of the global population. She proposed that the 75th anniversary of diplomatic ties serves as an opportunity to advance stable and positive bilateral relations.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun echoed these sentiments, stating that the historical development of India-China relations demonstrates the benefits of mutual cooperation. He reiterated China's readiness to work with India under the strategic guidance of their leaders to enhance trust and expand cooperation.

Guo also referenced the strategic discussions between Modi and Xi during their meeting at the BRICS summit in Kazan, Russia, last year. Following that meeting, both nations have made strides toward implementing the leaders' consensus and achieving fruitful outcomes in various areas.

Renewed Efforts for Collaboration

Recent high-level meetings indicate a gradual thaw in relations. These include the Special Representatives (SRs) dialogue on boundary mechanisms and the visit of Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri to Beijing. The discussions aim to normalize relations and address longstanding issues.

On March 25, India and China held diplomatic talks in Beijing to focus on effective border management and the resumption of cross-border cooperation. This included topics such as trans-border rivers and the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra. During the Working Mechanism for Consultation & Coordination (WMCC) meeting, both sides explored measures to implement decisions made during earlier dialogues, including discussions between NSA Ajit Doval and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.

The following day, senior officials from both countries met to explore ways to rebuild ties and promote people-to-people exchanges. They discussed resuming direct flights and the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, as well as reactivating dialogue mechanisms step-by-step to address each other's priorities. The Ministry of External Affairs noted these efforts as a step toward placing bilateral relations on a more stable and predictable path.

A Vision for the Future

As India and China mark 75 years of diplomatic relations, both nations appear committed to fostering mutual understanding and cooperation. With a focus on strategic trust, peaceful coexistence, and shared progress, the "dragon-elephant tango" symbolizes a hopeful vision for the future of this crucial partnership.
