Rajiv Kumar, the Chief Election Commissioner of India, extends a warm welcome to 75 foreign delegates hailing from 23 countries who have been invited by the Election Commission of India (ECI) to observe the unfolding of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
In a significant display of scale and international participation, the ECI has invited representatives from various election management bodies (EMBs) and organizations from 23 countries, including Bhutan, Mongolia, Australia, Madagascar, Fiji, Kyrgyz Republic, Russia, Moldova, Tunisia, Seychelles, Cambodia, Nepal, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe, Bangladesh, Kazakhstan, Georgia, Chile, Uzbekistan, Maldives, Papua New Guinea, and Namibia. Additionally, members of the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) and media teams from Bhutan and Israel will also be participating.
This initiative by the Election Commission of India highlights its dedication to conducting general elections of the highest standards and provides an invaluable opportunity for the invited EMBs to witness firsthand the democratic excellence that India exemplifies.
The Election Visitors' Programme (IEVP) organized by the ECI during the ongoing Lok Sabha Elections 2024 aims to familiarize foreign EMBs with India's electoral system and showcase the best practices employed by the world's largest democracy. The programme commences on May 4th and includes addresses by Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar, Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, and Dr. Sukhbir Singh Sandhu on May 5th.
Following the addresses, the delegates will be divided into small groups and dispatched to various constituencies in Maharashtra, Goa, Gujarat, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh to observe the polls and assess the related preparedness. The programme concludes on May 9th.
The ongoing Lok Sabha elections, which commenced on April 19th and are being conducted in seven phases, are set to conclude on June 1st, with the counting of votes scheduled for June 4th.
