India continues to solidify its position as a critical market for global smartphone brands, with the country playing a significant role in the sales and production strategies of major players like Apple and Samsung. According to estimates by Counterpoint Research, Apple achieved remarkable growth in India, with the country contributing 6% of its global iPhone sales volume in the fourth quarter (Q4) of calendar year (CY) 2024. This success was largely driven by the iPhone 15, which emerged as the best-selling smartphone in India during the quarter.
Samsung also posted impressive results, with India accounting for 12% of its total global smartphone sales volume in the same period. Both Apple and Samsung managed to expand their market shares in India by 1 percentage point compared to the same quarter last year.
Apple's success in India is noteworthy, as the company has also ramped up its manufacturing presence in the country. A significant 12% of global iPhone production has shifted to India, with exports reaching a staggering $11.53 billion in CY 2024—marking a 42% growth compared to the previous year. Additionally, Apple entered the top five list of best-selling smartphones in India during Q4, claiming the fifth spot by overtaking Realme.
Meanwhile, Chinese smartphone brands continue to maintain a stronghold in India despite geopolitical tensions between India and China, which have started to ease. Vivo, for instance, saw its global sales volume contribution from India rise to 33% in Q4 CY 2024, compared to 31% in the same period last year. Vivo also increased its share of the Indian market to 20%, displacing Xiaomi, which held the top position a year ago.
For Oppo and OnePlus combined, India accounted for 27% of their global sales volume, up from 23% in the corresponding quarter last year. However, Xiaomi experienced a decline, with India's contribution to its global sales volume falling to 15%.
Shilpi Jain, a senior research analyst at Counterpoint, highlighted India's growing importance in the global smartphone landscape: “India is the second-largest smartphone market in the world. 5G adoption, increasing premiumisation, a growing middle class, and a large population serving a broad consumer base have made India a lucrative market for all players. It is also emerging as a manufacturing hub.”
Counterpoint's latest data also underscores India's expanding influence in the global smartphone market. In Q4 CY 2024, India's share of global smartphone sales volume rose by 1 percentage point, reaching 13% compared to the previous year.
With robust demand, increasing local manufacturing, and a vibrant consumer base, India is cementing its status as a vital market for the world's leading smartphone brands.
