Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday underscored the relevance of Buddha’s teachings in solving all modern problems related to war, economic instability and religious fanaticism, while reiterating that India gave the world Buddh, not ‘yudh’ (war).
Inaugurating the two-day Global Buddhist Summit in Delhi, Modi referred to the Ukraine-Russia war and said amidst all this, Buddhism is the biggest strength of the earth.
The summit is being organised by the Union culture ministry and the International Buddhist Confederation.
Without naming any country, Modi said on the one hand, two countries are at war for months, while on the other hand, the world is going through economic instability. Threats like terrorism and religious fanaticism are attacking the soul of humanity.
"All the problems of modern times lend themselves to solutions through the ancient teachings of Lord Buddha. He preached abandoning war, defeat and victory for eternal peace,” Modi said while underscoring the relevance of Buddha’s teachings in modern times.
Modi also said that enmity can never be countered with enmity and happiness lies in unity, and remembered he telling the United Nations a few years ago that “we are the country that has given the world Buddh, not yudh.”
Addressing delegates from 30 countries in attendance at the summit, Modi said guests are considered equivalent to the God in this land of Buddha.
