India has launched two new visa categories for international students: the 'e-student visa' and 'e-student-x visa,' aimed at enhancing higher education opportunities. Applicants must use the 'Study in India' (SII) portal to apply. The e-student visa is for foreign students admitted to SII partner institutions, while the e-student-x visa is for their dependents. Valid visas allow entry through any immigration checkpoint, and the initiative supports over 600 institutions offering diverse courses, fostering cultural exchange and educational growth.
In a progressive move to enhance its educational landscape, India has unveiled two specialized visa categories tailored for international students looking to pursue higher education in the country. The 'e-student visa' and 'e-student-x' visa have been launched by the Ministry of Home Affairs, marking an exciting opportunity for aspiring scholars.
According to officials, applicants must utilize the 'Study in India' (SII) portal, a government initiative designed to streamline the admission process for international students. The e-student visa is available to eligible foreign students who register on the SII portal. In contrast, the e-student-x visa is specifically for dependents of individuals holding e-student visas.
The SII portal serves as a comprehensive platform for students interested in both long-term and short-term courses in India. Students are required to apply for their visas through the official website, [Indian Visa Online] (https://indianvisaonline.gov.in/), where their application authenticity will be validated using their SII ID. Thus, it is crucial for students to apply to Indian higher educational institutions via the SII website, officials emphasized.
To qualify for the e-student visa, students must obtain an admission offer from any of the SII partner institutions. This visa caters to foreign nationals who wish to study full-time, including undergraduate, postgraduate, and PhD programs at recognized educational institutions in India. The duration of student visas can extend up to five years, depending on the course length, with options for renewal while in India.
Moreover, holders of valid e-student visas can enter India through any immigration checkpoint of their choice. The SII initiative is a flagship project of the Ministry of Education, featuring over 600 partner institutions that collectively offer more than 8,000 diverse courses across various fields, including engineering, management, agriculture, sciences, arts, humanities, and specialized studies such as Buddhist Studies and Yoga.
To apply, students need to provide basic information, including their name, country, date of birth, mobile number, and email address. Each aspiring student must obtain a unique SII ID, which is essential for accessing their dashboard, tracking the progress of applications, and navigating visa-related processes. As officials noted, "No student SII ID means no chance of studying or moving to India."
This initiative not only opens doors for international students but also enriches India’s educational environment, fostering a vibrant exchange of ideas and cultural diversity.
