India Navy appointed first woman commanding officer in naval ship, says Admiral R Hari Kumar

On Friday, Indian Navy Chief Admiral R. Hari Kumar announced the appointment of the first female commanding officer of a navy ship. He went on to say that the Indian Navy now has over a thousand female Agniveers. In keeping with its principle of "all roles-all ranks" for female troops, Admiral stated that this is compatible.

We made history by appointing a woman to the position of command aboard an Indian naval vessel. "Our goal has always been to question the current quo so that the navy can continue on an ambitious and dynamic path into the future," Admiral Kumar reportedly told PTI.

He said that the number of female Agniveers has surpassed 1,000 and mentioned that the first class of the Indian Navy's Agniveers graduated from the prestigious INS Chilka in March of this year.

The inclusion of 272 female Agniveer trainees in this (first) batch is particularly noteworthy.Further, there were 454 women in the second group of Agniveers, and I'm happy to report that we've surpassed 1,000 female affiliates in the navy with the third group's recent induction," Admiral Kumar announced.

During a press conference held in the lead-up to Navy Day, Admiral Kumar stated that these figures demonstrate the Indian Navy's commitment to 'all roles and all levels,' which includes the deployment of women in all ranks of the military, from officers on down.

If you look back at the past year, you'll see that 2023 was an incredible one for our country. According to what Admiral Kumar said, "leaving a mark across various sectors and spheres, be it the economic front, diplomacy, or sports arena" (PTI, 2011).

The past year has also been extraordinary for the navy. During this time, our maritime vessels, underwater vehicles, and planes have maintained a high operational pace, carrying out missions and responsibilities that cover diplomatic, military, and constabulary functions," he added.

While operating in crucial waters over the last year, the ships, submarines, and planes of the Indian Navy maintained a high operational tempo, according to Admiral Kumar. We have maintained a constant presence in the Indo-Pacific region with our ships.

According to him, submarines have completed operational turnarounds at ports in Indonesia, Oman, and Australia.

"In the data-level operational readiness exercise in the months of January and February this year, more than 151 operational units took part in the exercise, which spanned an area of more than 21 million square nautical miles," according to him.
