United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has appointed Kamal Kishore, a seasoned official from India’s National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), as his Special Representative for Disaster Risk Reduction.
The spokesperson of the United Nations Secretary-General announced in a press conference that Kamal Kishore has been appointed ‘Assistant and Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) of the United Nations. Kamal Kishore will replace Japan’s Mami Mizutori in UNDRR.
Had an important role in G-20 working group
During India’s G-20 presidency, Kamal Kishore led the G-20 working group on disaster risk reduction and has played an important role in the development of the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Climate Action Summit in 2019.
UN Secretary General’s spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said that ‘Kamal Kishore has worked with the government, United Nations and civil society organizations. And also has nearly three decades of experience working in disaster risk reduction, climate action and sustainable development at global, regional, national and local levels.’
Guterres’ spokesperson said that “Prior to joining NDMA, Kishor worked in Geneva. Worked for about 13 years with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in New Delhi and New York. “In addition, Kishor has also led a global team of disaster risk reduction advisors to support UNDP-programme countries.”
As India continues to play a pivotal role in international disaster response, Kishore’s appointment coincides with the ongoing Tiger Triumph exercise, showcasing India’s commitment to humanitarian assistance during crises.
