India's Groundbreaking Biodiversity Documentation

In a remarkable achievement, India has become the first country in the world to prepare a comprehensive checklist of its entire fauna, covering an impressive 1,04,561 species. This historic milestone was celebrated on the 109th Foundation Day of the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) in Kolkata, where the 'Fauna of India Checklist Portal' was officially launched by Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav.

This groundbreaking initiative positions India as a global leader in the field of biodiversity documentation, setting an inspiring example for other nations to follow. The comprehensive faunal checklist, encompassing 121 checklists of all known taxa across 36 phyla, highlights the country's unwavering commitment to conservation and scientific research.

"India is a global champion in biodiversity conservation," remarked Yadav, emphasizing the government's various initiatives, such as the "Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam" program and the successful relocation of cheetahs, as testament to the nation's dedication to environmental preservation.

The comprehensive fauna checklist serves as an invaluable resource for a wide range of stakeholders, from taxonomists and researchers to conservation managers and policymakers. By documenting all known animal species in the country, this list provides a crucial baseline to track changes in biodiversity and identify threatened or endangered species that require targeted conservation efforts.

Moreover, the detailed inventory of India's fauna will enable scientists and researchers to better understand the country's rich ecological diversity, ultimately informing more effective policies and programs for wildlife protection, habitat preservation, and sustainable natural resource management.

"This document showcases India's commitment to biodiversity conservation and will enhance the country's role in global environmental stewardship," Yadav affirmed, underscoring the significance of this landmark achievement in the realm of biodiversity documentation and conservation.

As India celebrates this historic milestone, the nation's unwavering dedication to environmental preservation and its position as a global leader in this field serves as an inspiration to the world, paving the way for a more sustainable and ecologically balanced future.
