Internshala’s Annual Internship Trends Report for 2024 reveals an encouraging evolution in India's internship sector, showcasing a remarkable 25% growth in opportunities year-on-year and an impressive 135% increase over the past five years. This trend highlights the vital role internships play in bridging the gap between academic knowledge and practical experience, effectively preparing students for successful careers.

The report emphasizes a strong shift toward practical education and skill-based hiring practices. Companies are increasingly utilizing internships to discover and cultivate future talent. As organizations continue to prioritize experiential learning, the momentum observed in 2024 is anticipated to further accelerate into 2025.

Management stands out as the top sector for internships, accounting for 42% of roles in areas such as marketing, sales, finance, digital marketing, and human resources. Engineering internships follow, comprising 20% and offering positions in software development, product management, and core engineering fields. Media internships make up 13%, encompassing journalism, public relations, creative writing, and videography. Additionally, both education and design account for 4% each, providing opportunities in teaching, online tutoring, graphic design, and animation.

Financially, internships are becoming increasingly rewarding, with an average stipend of Rs 8,000 per month and top offers soaring to Rs 1,00,000 monthly. Notably, 22% of internships now include pre-placement offers (PPOs), further establishing them as a pathway to full-time employment.

Inclusivity emerged as a key theme in 2024, with 66% of employers expressing a willingness to hire women re-entering the workforce. This reflects ongoing efforts to promote diversity through flexible programs and mentorship opportunities. The rise of remote work has also expanded access, with 49% of internships available as work-from-home roles, making positions more attainable for students, particularly those in tier-2 and tier-3 cities.

In-demand skills this year include proficiency in English, MS Excel, social media marketing, and digital marketing. Technical roles have seen a surge in demand for expertise in JavaScript, ReactJS, AutoCAD, and Adobe Photoshop.

Geographically, internships are predominantly found in major urban centers like Delhi-NCR (31%), Mumbai (17%), and Bangalore (11%). However, the increasing prevalence of remote internships is helping to distribute opportunities more widely.

Looking ahead to 2025, the report envisions a future where internships become even more innovative, inclusive, and aligned with industry demands. Students can anticipate not only valuable professional exposure but also additional benefits such as certifications, letters of recommendation, and wellness programs. As the internship landscape continues to evolve, it remains a fundamental part of India’s career ecosystem, empowering students to excel in a competitive job market.
