In a recent announcement, the commerce and industry ministry revealed that between 2018 and 2023, India saw a significant doubling in its patents and industrial filings, with trademarks witnessing a remarkable 60% growth. This surge has propelled India to the sixth position globally, with an impressive 64,480 patent filings, representing a 15.7% increase driven by indigenous innovation.
Minister of Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal, hailed India's achievements in intellectual property, stating, "A global leader in innovation, India has exhibited a remarkable growth in the patents, designs & trademarks filings according to @WIPO Indicators 2024 report." He emphasized the government's steadfast commitment to fostering an ecosystem conducive to innovation and intellectual property protection. The WIPO report further underscores India's exceptional performance, noting that the country recorded the fastest growth in patent filings among the top 20 nations. In 2023 alone, patent filings surged by 15.7%, marking five consecutive years of double-digit growth. India now stands at the fourth position globally in trademark filings, reflecting a 6.1% increase, with a significant majority originating from domestic entities. Key sectors driving this growth include health, agriculture, and clothing.
Moreover, India's ascent in industrial design filings is noteworthy, with a remarkable 36.4% increase in 2023, propelling the country to the tenth spot globally. The creative design landscape in India is flourishing, with sectors such as textiles & accessories, tools & machines, and health & pharmaceuticals witnessing substantial growth and collectively constituting nearly half of all design filings.
