The availability of internships in the country has surged dramatically in the last three years, as organizations increasingly focus on preparing young professionals with skills that meet industry demands. A recent report by global job site Indeed highlights this significant shift.
According to the report, internships are becoming a central strategy for companies looking to equip emerging talent with real-world expertise. Data from Indeed reveals that internship postings in India have grown by an impressive 103% between February 2022 and February 2025. This indicates a clear trend of businesses investing in internships to bridge the gap between academic learning and practical workplace requirements.
Indeed's analysis, based on platform data from the same period, underscores how evolving industries—particularly those influenced by advancements in artificial intelligence, data analytics, and digital transformation—are leveraging internships to provide hands-on experience. These opportunities also allow companies to identify and nurture promising talent early in their careers.
When it comes to internship interest, Delhi, Karnataka, and Maharashtra top the list, accounting for 7.2%, 6.8%, and 6.2% of total searches, respectively, according to the report.
In terms of financial compensation, the average monthly internship stipend in India is Rs 25,432. However, cities such as Hyderabad, Bangalore, Mumbai, Pune, and Gurgaon exceed this national average, offering more competitive stipends. On the other hand, cities like Chennai and Kolkata fall on the lower end of the pay scale.
As industries continue to evolve rapidly, internships are playing an increasingly vital role in shaping the next generation of professionals. With organizations doubling down on initiatives to foster skill development and identify future leaders, this trend is expected to keep growing.
