With the launch and safe landing of the Chandrayaan-3 mission, India has once again made its mark on the world stage, this time as a leading space and science power. In light of growing international acclaim for the work of India's Space Research Organisation (ISRO), NASA extended an invitation to New Delhi to sell US space technology to India.
ISRO chairman S Somanath spoke at a recent event at Rameshwaram honoring the 92nd birthday of the late President Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, during which he recounted India's remarkable progress in space technology, including the creation of the Chandrayaan-3 mission.
Somanath recalled that in August 2023, a representative from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) visited the ISRO headquarters in preparation for the launch of the Chandrayaan-3 mission. The scientists were so impressed by the high-tech yet low-cost scientific instruments used in India's soft landing that they recommended the country share their face technology with the United States.
We had around five or six visitors from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and we gave them a rundown of the Chandrayaan-3 mission's technological highlights. That was before August 23rd, when everything came to a gentle stop. There was only a "We have no comments" statement. It's all going to work out fine. They also remarked, "Take a look at the laboratory equipment; it's gorgeous and it's inexpensive." They're high-tech and simple to construct. So, how did you construct it? The head of ISRO questioned why they weren't trying to sell it to the United States.
Director General of ISRO Urges Young People to Consider Careers in Space
S Somanath, in an effort to inspire students to make greater contributions to India's space technology, said that the country is now capable of producing world-class hardware and rockets.
He modeled his speech after that of previous president Dr. APJ Kalam, encouraging the young people in the audience to share the former leader's belief that it is possible to reach the moon.
One of you may have designed the rocket that will carry Chandrayaan-10 into space, and another of you may be riding on it. It's more likely to be a girl. He predicted that an Indian girl will be the first human to set foot on the moon.
The ISRO director further mentioned that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had phoned him after Chandrayaan-3 landed safely on the moon. ISRO's head recalled how PM Modi asked when an Indian would go to the moon after hearing "India is on the Moon, sir."
