US issues over 1 million non-immigrant visas to Indians in 2024

The US Mission in India has successfully issued over one million nonimmigrant visas in 2024, marking a significant milestone for the second consecutive year. With more than two million Indians visiting the U.S. from January to November, this reflects a 26% increase from 2023. Plans for a new H-1B visa renewal system by 2025 aim to ease the process for Indian professionals. The U.S. also remains a top destination for Indian students, with over 331,000 currently enrolled.

In a significant accomplishment, the US Mission in India has issued over one million nonimmigrant visas in 2024, marking the second consecutive year this impressive milestone has been reached. This achievement includes a record number of visitor visas, highlighting the increasing enthusiasm among Indians to explore the United States for tourism, business, and educational opportunities.

From January to November 2024, more than two million Indians traveled to the United States, representing a remarkable 26% increase from the same time frame in 2023. The U.S. embassy noted, “The US mission to India issued more than one million nonimmigrant visas... underscoring the huge demand of Indians for travel to the United States.”

Additionally, exciting news is on the horizon for Indian professionals working in the U.S. The US Mission has announced plans to implement a new U.S.-based system for H-1B visa renewals by 2025, aiming to make the renewal process much smoother. This initiative will significantly benefit Indian workers, enabling them to renew their visas without the need for international travel, a process that has often been fraught with challenges.

For instance, an H-1B visa holder currently employed in the tech sector might previously have faced uncertainties during renewal time, often requiring a trip back to India. However, the new pilot program introduced in 2024 has already streamlined the renewal process for thousands of applicants, alleviating the stress and logistical hurdles associated with international travel.

The embassy's report reveals that the number of Indian visitors to the U.S. has surged fivefold over the past four years, with more than two million Indians making the journey in the initial 11 months of 2024. Currently, over five million Indians hold nonimmigrant visas to the U.S., with the mission issuing thousands more daily.

Furthermore, the US Mission has facilitated family reunification and the migration of skilled professionals by issuing tens of thousands of immigrant visas. Recipients of these visas gain permanent residency upon arrival, enriching the vibrant Indian diaspora in the United States.

The U.S. remains a top destination for Indian students, with India emerging as the leading source of international students in 2024. Over 331,000 Indian students are currently enrolled in U.S. institutions, and the number of graduate students from India has grown by 19%, reaching nearly 200,000. As more Indian students pursue advanced degrees in the U.S., the country continues to hold its position as the largest source of international graduate students for the second consecutive year. American universities offer a diverse range of programs and cutting-edge research opportunities, particularly in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

In addition to the record number of visas issued, the US Mission has improved the processing of interview waiver-eligible applications, resulting in reduced wait times for many Indian applicants. The embassy remarked, "By streamlining operations and utilizing global consular resources, the U.S. mission has been able to redirect its resources to focus on in-person interviews."

Moreover, updates to the J-1 visa program have allowed participants to remain in the U.S. for two years post-program completion without returning home, thanks to their removal from the Exchange Visitors Skills List. This change offers greater flexibility for J-1 visa holders and contributes to the growing community of professionals in the United States.
