Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath, in an interview at the Maha Kumbh Mela, emphasized its cultural unity and economic benefits, projecting it to generate ₹2 lakh crores. Advocating developmental policies over "freebie culture," he highlighted the state's rise in tourism and spiritual significance under PM Modi's leadership. Addressing societal divisions, he stressed unity through Sanatan Dharma. He discussed infrastructure, welfare schemes, and investment growth in UP, contrasting it with Delhi's governance. Yogi reaffirmed his focus on heritage, development, and self-reliance for sustained growth.

Maha Kumbh Mela: A Celebration of Faith, Unity, and Development in Uttar Pradesh

The Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, has become a beacon of cultural pride, spiritual unity, and economic growth under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. In a recent exclusive interview with Network18 Group Editor-in-Chief Rahul Joshi, Adityanath shed light on the transformative vision behind this grand event, its global appeal, and its significant socio-economic impact.

The Chief Minister attributed the success of the Maha Kumbh Mela to the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who emphasized the importance of preserving India’s rich heritage. “The heritage of India should be honoured. And what should be the responsibility of a government to honour that faith? It is a result of that, the divine and magnificent Kumbh is being celebrated in this form,” Adityanath explained. He highlighted the event's role in bridging generations, allowing the youth to connect with thousands of years of cultural and spiritual traditions.

A Gathering of Unity and Faith

The Maha Kumbh Mela, often described as a confluence of faith, is witnessing record-breaking participation. “This event is a gathering of India's unity, a gathering that gives a message,” Adityanath stated. He noted that attendance has grown exponentially, with over 10 crore devotees participating in the first ten days alone. The Chief Minister predicted that by the end of the 45-day event, over 40 crore people would have visited, making it akin to hosting the third-largest population in the world within a temporary city.

Reflecting on the symbolism of the event, Adityanath emphasized its message of equality and harmony. “Neither caste nor creed, nor any community, nor any difference of gender—everyone is able to bathe in one Sangam. There is no discrimination with anyone,” he remarked, underscoring the inclusive nature of Sanatan Dharma.

Economic and Cultural Impact

Beyond its spiritual significance, the Maha Kumbh Mela is a driver of economic activity and infrastructure development. The state has invested ₹7,500 crore to enhance connectivity and facilities in the region. The event is expected to generate ₹2 lakh crore in economic activity, equivalent to 10% of Uttar Pradesh’s GDP. “When you recognize your own strength, growth will continue to progress in the same way,” Adityanath said.

The Chief Minister also highlighted Uttar Pradesh's rise as a top destination for tourism, attributing this to the Prime Minister’s focus on spiritual heritage. From the redevelopment of the Kashi Vishwanath Corridor in Varanasi to the construction of the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya, these initiatives have drawn millions of visitors, strengthening the state’s economy and global reputation.

Attracting the Youth and Global Attention

Adityanath took pride in the increasing participation of young people and international visitors at the Maha Kumbh Mela. He contrasted the event’s modern inclusivity with its past neglect, stating, “The previous governments made Kumbh Mela a place of filth, filth, and impoverishment.” Under the current administration, the integration of cleanliness, security, and modern facilities has transformed the Kumbh into an event that resonates with both tradition and contemporary values.

This holistic approach has attracted not just devotees but also professionals, including entrepreneurs and technocrats, who are drawn to the event’s message of unity and resilience. “When there is a confluence of faith and modernity, the youth will be attracted to it,” he noted.

Development Over Freebies

Addressing the broader governance philosophy, Adityanath advocated for performance-based welfare schemes over the "freebie culture" criticized by Prime Minister Modi. “We have to work with a long-term vision. It has to be performance-based,” he said, emphasizing that sustainable growth and self-reliance are built on action and accountability.

He highlighted the state’s achievements in providing basic amenities to millions, such as housing, toilets, and electricity, without engaging in populist giveaways. These initiatives, he argued, strengthen public trust and empower citizens, driving Uttar Pradesh toward its goal of becoming a $1 trillion economy.

Preserving Unity Amid Challenges

The Chief Minister also addressed societal challenges, including attempts to divide communities along caste or regional lines. “For their political selfishness, if the society is divided... this is not less than treason,” he declared, reaffirming his commitment to unity through the principles of Sanatan Dharma. Adityanath stressed that the strength of India lies in its unity, which is embodied in events like the Maha Kumbh Mela.

A Legacy of Leadership

Reflecting on his tenure, Adityanath attributed the progress in Uttar Pradesh to disciplined governance and a focus on development. “If I apply it strictly to myself, then naturally, Uttar Pradesh benefits from it,” he remarked. He expressed confidence in the double-engine government’s ability to deliver on its promises, ensuring safety, employment, and prosperity for all.

As Uttar Pradesh positions itself as a global hub for spiritual tourism and economic growth, the Maha Kumbh Mela stands as a testament to the state’s transformation under Yogi Adityanath’s leadership. Its success not only celebrates India’s cultural heritage but also underscores the potential of visionary governance to unite and uplift communities.
