As WWDC 2024 commenced, Apple CEO Tim Cook had the pleasure of meeting Akshat Srivastava, a 22-year-old student developer from India. Currently studying at BITS Pilani K K Birla College in Goa, Srivastava was among the esteemed winners of Apple's Swift Student Challenge, recognized for his innovative app, MindBud.
Akshat's coding journey began during his teenage years in Varanasi. His winning app, MindBud, was inspired by moments spent with his nephew and aims to introduce children to classic games and activities from his own childhood. The app features four engaging mini-games designed to foster both analytical and creative thinking in kids, making it enjoyable for the entire family.
Tim Cook expressed his admiration for Akshat and other developers from India, stating, "I met so many extraordinary developers when I visited India last year, and I saw so much excitement for the many ways that technology can enrich people’s lives. It was equally wonderful to meet Akshat this week, and see how he’s created a whole new way to share his love of classic games with the next generation."
The Swift Student Challenge honors top student coding talent from around the globe. This year, 50 students were recognized for their exceptional app playgrounds, noted for their innovation, creativity, social impact, or inclusivity. These winners, including Akshat, were invited to a three-day in-person experience at Apple Park during the WWDC event.
Reflecting on his experience, Akshat shared, "The highlight of my trip was presenting my project to Tim Cook, which felt like a dream come true. His genuine interest and insightful feedback were incredibly inspiring and made all my hard work feel worthwhile. MindBud leverages Apple tools such as SwiftUI, AVKit, PencilKit, and FileManager to deliver a seamless and immersive experience. Akshat plans to publish MindBud on the App Store, aiming to reach a broader audience and inspire more children with his creative and educational games.
Akshat is part of a burgeoning generation of Indian developers making significant impacts in their communities and around the world. During the COVID-19 crisis, he developed an app to track vacant hospital beds via social media posts, showcasing his commitment to using technology to solve real-world problems.
